The brief from Travelodge was to provide a hotel with 63 bedrooms, of which 4 were to be accessible standard and 29 family rooms. The bedrooms have been arranged over three upper floors accessed by a stairway and lift from the ground floor reception area. The ground floor, with the main entrance off the car park, incorporates the reception and back of house facilities with the remainder of the space used for two A1/A3 units.
The building sits hard up to the back of footpath in order to reinforce the traditional built up character of the area whilst forming a corner to St Peters Way. The location provides excellent visibility both for the Hotel and also the ground floor A1/ A3 units.
Car parking is arranged to the remainder of the site with a landscaped edge onto Midworth Street. A pedestrian access route is also provided from Midworth Street.
The mixed use of the building is expressed in the elevation with the upper bedroom floors set on a ground floor plinth. This is achieved by a change in materials and a series of vertical strip windows that visually connects the bedroom floors.
The building was completed by main contractor Harris CM in October 2020 and was handed over to Travelodge as a turn-key project.
